DICK BARBOUR RACING SCORES 2ND STRAIGHT WIN
WOLLEK AND MAASSEN GRAB GT VICTORY AT
THE GRAND PRIX OF CHARLOTTE
Charlotte, NC, April 1, 2000 - Drivers Bob Wollek and Sascha Maassen handed the GT win to the Dick Barbour Racing Team today in the second race of the American Le Mans Series - the Grand Prix of Charlotte.
Wollek and Maassen piloted their Porsche 911 GT3R, number 51, to a thrilling come-from-behind victory after passing the number 10 Prototype Technology BMW in the last two minutes of the race.
The team's second entry and pole-sitter, the number 5 Porsche 911 GT3R piloted by Dirk Muller and Lucas Luhr, experienced an off-course excursion which resulted in damage to a water radiator and nose piece. The car was repaired in the pit lane and was not only able to finish the race - but score the fast lap as well.
This victory represents the second straight GT win for Dick Barbour Racing since the team started its first season. As a new effort, Dick Barbour Racing has performed exceptionally well - three straight poles and three fastest laps in the first three races (Daytona, Sebring and Charlotte), two track-breaking pole qualifying runs (Daytona and Sebring), and two straight GT wins - the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Grand Prix of Charlotte.
Dick Barbour - Owner, Dick Barbour Racing
"I'm extremely proud of my entire team. This is a very competitive series that continues to test our abilities and will to win. This victory at Charlotte was not an easy one. It tested both our abilities and desire to win right from the start, and all the way to the finish. The team rose to the occasion - and excelled! We are very fortunate to compete with such incredible partners - Porsche, Michelin, and Mobil 1 - that operate at the highest standard of excellence. It is our commitment to them to operate our team with the same high standards."
Sascha Maassen - Porsche 911 GT3R Car Number 51
"The last move on the number 10 BMW was extremely thrilling and very exciting for me! I was still shaking when I got out of the car after the race. I hope it was as exciting for the fans as it was for me and my team."
Bob Wollek - Porsche 911 GT3R Car Number 51
"To win a race you need the best car, the best team, the best tires and a little luck. Today we had all of these!"
Dirk Muller - Porsche 911 GT3R Car Number 5
"We had the fastest car today. We experienced a little bad luck - and so with enormous effort from the team we got the car back in the race - and it was after that that we did the fastest lap in today's GT class. My congratulations to my team mates Sascha and Bob!"
