DICK BARBOUR RACING WINS THE CLASSIC NURBURGRING
Road Atlanta, GA July 9, 2000 - Dick Barbour Racing has captured their 4th straight American Le Mans Series win and 2nd straight European Le Mans Series win by claiming the checkered flag at today's Bitburger/AvD 1000 km at the famed Nurburgring in Germany.
Both Dick Barbour Racing's entries started the race in excellent position after dominating Saturday's qualifying session with the number 51 car grabbing the pole and the number 5 car starting second.
The Dick Barbour Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R, number 5, piloted by Dirk Muller and Lucas Luhr crossed the finish line in the lead, two laps ahead of their nearest competitor. Muller and Luhr led for most of the entire race and only relinquished the lead briefly - to their own teammates - Wollek and Maassen.
The Dick Barbour Racing number 51 Porsche 911 GT3R, piloted by Bob Wollek and Sascha Maassen, experienced trouble and left the track at lap 58.
Dick Barbour
"I'm extremely happy that we won today, and I'm very proud of our team. I was very fortunate to win this race 20 years ago to the day, with John Fitzpatrick in a Porsche 935. It was 1980, my last year of racing as a driver before retiring. To come back 20 years later and win here again is a truly amazing feeling!"
Dirk Muller
"I really enjoy racing here and very much wanted to win in my home country. It was a very competitive race right from the start and the hard work and dedication of all my teammates once again put me in the best car. The race was run in heavy rain, there was only one all-weather tire to be on, and our Michelins brought us the victory. Thanks to them, Lucas and my team for an excellent effort!"
Lucas Luhr
"I'm really excited to help deliver this win to Porsche right here in their backyard. They continue to provide me with an amazing racecar that is impeccably prepared for each race by our crew. It is always intense when you compete at this level - having both Porsche and my team continue to provide me with an excellent car makes my job easier."
Bob Wollek
"I was very pleased with the performance and set-up of the car. We scored the pole and both Sascha and I were very prepared to compete. Unfortunately, we experienced some difficulty and had to leave the race early. These things happen even to the best prepared cars by the best team."
Sascha Maassen
"I was very happy that we won the pole and was looking forward to a very fast and competitive race with an excellent car. But, as sometimes happens in racing, we experienced some difficulty and had to retire from the race. Up until then Bob and I were right where we wanted to be."
