DICK BARBOUR RACING RETURNS TO CALIFORNIA
Road Atlanta, GA July 11, 2000 Dick Barbour Racing heads to California to compete in the fifth American Le Mans Series race, the Grand Prix of Sonoma, at Sears Point on July 23rd. The team will enter two Porsche 911 GT3 R's - the number 5 car driven by Dirk Muller and Lucas Luhr, and the number 51 car driven by Bob Wollek and Sascha Maassen.
The team comes to Sears Point hot after winning its fourth ALMS race in a row - the 12 Hours of Sebring, the Grand Prix of Charlotte, the Silverstone 500 USA Challenge and the Bitburger/AvD 1000 at the Nurburgring in Germany. Dick Barbour Racing is currently first in Team Points with Muller first in Drivers Points and Luhr in second. The team has been fortunate to garner the pole position in each of the four races, as well as the fastest lap.
In addition to this 2000 ALMS season marking a return to racing for sportscar legend Dick Barbour, his return to Sears Point will be very memorable. During Barbour's incredible string of racing seasons his base of operations was in Mountain View. In his last year before retiring as a driver, Barbour scored an amazing 14 victories in 16 races, his third 12 Hours of Sebring, his third 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Overall IMSA Championship and the coveted Porsche Cup.
Said Barbour, " Having grown up in California, and competing in one of my first races at Sears Point, I'm extremely happy to come back. In my last race at Sears Point I was fortunate to have my two cars cross the finish line in first and second. I'm once again bringing two cars and I very much hope that I can duplicate that win. The fans in California are extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sportscar racing - we want to give them a great show!"
The American Le Mans Series announced today that with the victory at the Nurburgring, Dick Barbour Racing nailed down a pre-qualifying exemption for the 2001 24 Hours of Le Mans. The exemptions are part of the American Le Mans Series program in arrangement with the Automobile Club l'Ouest (ACO), organizers of the historic race in France.
